Tipping in Buenos Aires

In Buenos Aires no tip is left in all services. The most common is to do it with waiters in restaurants and bars, deliveries, tour guides, hotel bellboys and hotel, airport and bus station porters. It is not common or mandatory to tip taxi drivers but, as in everything, when they are super friendly or help us with the objects that we get on or off of the taxi, such as the baby's stroller, a bag or suitcase or any other, not only the they deserve, but will welcome it.

In gastronomic establishments it is important to remember that the tip is not included in the bill and it has no relation whatsoever to the "cost of the cover. It can be given directly by hand to the person who attended us or left on the table, both under some object that weighs (a cup, a salt shaker) and inside the folder in which the bill was brought to us, but always in cash.

The percentage dedicated to tips on the consumption carried out varies from country to country. In Buenos Aires, as in all of Argentina, the suggested minimum is 10%. If we consider that the person who attended us deserves more, of course we can change that percentage to whatever we want. By law, the diner has the option to reserve the right to tip. But that attitude is almost unthinkable, because tradition is very established and the gastronomic staff really count on that, since salaries are not usually very high.

Another frequent situation in gastronomic spaces, whether there is the possibility of consuming on the spot or not, is to find, in bars or restaurants –especially those that offer take away food service- a large jar on the counter with the label “Tips ”, Where employees collect collectively and then divide. They are working and they serve us with the same kindness as if we were sitting at a table.
