From June 27 to August 31, Parque Thays will host a very special guest: an impressive replica of the skeleton of the largest dinosaur in the world. The Patagotitan mayorum measures 40 meters long, 8 meters tall, and weighs 72 tons. The specimen was discovered in 2014 in the province of Chubut, and now the scientific and technical team from the Egidio Feruglio Museum (MEF) in Trelew has developed its replica.
Each piece was modeled bone by bone, with an unprecedented level of detail and scientific accuracy. 3D scanning and printing technology was used, along with highly precise artisanal techniques.
Now you can experience the thrill of standing close to this grand prehistoric figure right in Palermo—completely free of charge!
A major discovery
Patagotitan was discovered in 2014 at La Flecha ranch in Chubut by paleontologists José Luis Carballido, Diego Pol, and the MEF team. More than 180 bones in excellent condition were recovered—a key find for understanding gigantism in titanosaurs.
The name Patagotitan mayorum combines the region where this new species was found, Argentine Patagonia (Patago), its strength and massive size (titan), and the Mayo family, owners of the land where the fossils were unearthed (mayorum).
Like a puzzle
The replica arrived in the city in parts, and its assembly was a true adventure: over 4 days, MEF’s specialized technical staff carried out the large-scale build using cranes, scaffolding, and ladders.
Each piece was joined with precision—first the legs, then the pelvis. Balance was achieved by assembling the neck and tail sections. Finally, the skull was added.
