Here the military barracks was installed at the beginning of the 19th century. Its name is in memory of Juan Lavalle (1797-1841), Argentine military and politician.

In the square, which occupies three blocks, stands the Hipolito Yrigoyen monuments, Fountain to the National Ballet and Active Memory.
