21K de Buenos Aires

On Sunday, August 23, thousands of runners will once again take to the streets of Buenos Aires in one of the most important half marathons in Latin America. It’s 21 kilometers that cross some of the city’s most recognizable landscapes and bring together elite athletes and amateur runners in the same sporting celebration.

Buenos Aires runs

There is a Buenos Aires you discover walking, another you see from a terrace, and another that appears when you run through it.

During the 21K Buenos Aires, that last version takes over the streets. On Sunday, August 23, starting at 8 am, thousands of runners will gather in Palermo to participate in a competition that is already part of the international sports calendar and attracts participants from different countries every year.

Organized by Asociación Ñandú since 2009, the Buenos Aires International Half Marathon is known for its flat and fast course, a combination that has made it one of the most important races in the region. The competition is part of the World Athletics Label Race calendar and hosts the Argentine Half Marathon Championship.

But there is another reason why the 21K is attractive even for those who don’t run: for a few hours, Buenos Aires changes its rhythm.

21 kilometers to see the city differently

The start and finish line will be at Av. Figueroa Alcorta and Dorrego, in Palermo. From there, the course extends through different parts of the city and runs along the Río de la Plata, combining wide avenues, parks and some of Buenos Aires’ most recognizable urban spaces.

For runners, each section has its own challenge. For companions, the course offers different opportunities to get closer to the race, cheer participants and discover how the city transforms when an avenue becomes a track for a few hours.

The Palermo area, parks, coastal corridor and sectors near downtown are part of a landscape visitors can experience from another perspective.

A race that brings everyone together

Although elite athletes’ names attract much of the attention, the 21K has a feature that explains its huge turnout: at the same start line, professional runners share space with people who trained for months to achieve a personal best, complete a half marathon for the first time or simply enjoy the challenge.

The 2025 edition gathered 27,500 runners, consolidating the race as one of the most popular in Latin America. That year, Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo set a new course record with 58 minutes and 29 seconds.

This mix of high-level competition and popular participation is part of the race’s spirit. Some run against the clock, others against their own limits.

Much more than 21 kilometers

Running also works as a unique way to get to know a city. Participants cover in just over an hour spaces that would normally take several outings to explore.

The course allows contemplation of the urban landscape from a different scale: trees, parks, avenues, buildings and the Río de la Plata appear as part of the same sequence.

For non-runners, the event can also be a Sunday plan. Going to Palermo to support family or friends, cheer participants and then continue the outing through parks, museums, cafés and restaurants in the area lets you experience the day from another angle.

The start of a sports season

The 21K also serve as a prelude to another major event on Buenos Aires’ calendar: the Buenos Aires International Marathon, scheduled for September 20, 2026.

Thus, August and September find Buenos Aires immersed in a succession of competitions that turn its streets into sports stages and bring athletics closer to increasingly broad audiences.

The city has many ways of moving. In the 21K, it does so to the rhythm of thousands of steps heading toward the same goal.

And perhaps that is one of the best ways to see Buenos Aires: running it, sharing it and discovering that, even in motion, each neighborhood has something to tell.
