Here the first Fort of Buenos Aires was built in 1580 and the national authorities settled in 1810.

Only in 1862 regained prominence as the seat of government during the presidency of Bartolomé Miter who settled there with his ministers.

His successor, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, embellished it with gardens and painted the facade of rose for the first time, giving it the name of Casa Rosada.
