Saint Moritz Confectionery

Retiro
The neighborhood of Retiro, corner Esmeralda, there is one of its most traditional confectioneries: Saint Moritz. Its name evokes one of Switzerland's best known winter resorts.

The confectionery Saint Moritz opened its doors in 1959. In a short time it gained the adhesion of an important clientele. The access by Esmeralda was used for sale to the public. Masses, sweet bread and crumb sandwiches were some of their specialties. This service was offered until 1986.

Saint Moritz's spacious hall is modulated by four central columns surrounded by mirrors. The tables, square, are covered with red tablecloths, and on these other yellows with the name of the confectionery embroidered in red. The chairs are upholstered in the same color. The walls, above the boiserie, present several Saint Moritz posters and drawings from different places in France. Behind the main bar, where the box is, the different bottles of whiskey are shown as a kaleidoscope. The other bar, which was for sale to the public of the confectionery, maintains as a witness the paper holder, including the paper with which the "treasures" of the confectionery were wrapped.

In the 60s and 70s this confectionery was chosen for tea after the tour of the numerous art galleries in the area. The Saint Moritz tables heard, among others, the dialogues of Dona Leonor Acevedo and her son, the brilliant writer Jorge Luis Borges, neighbors of the local.
