Mercado de San Telmo

San Telmo
What can you buy in the San Telmo market? Well, perhaps it is easier to answer what is not found in this mythical place. It is that in this great and old market there are from fruits and furniture to clothing, accessories, decorative objects and many antiques.

Located in the heart of Plaza Dorrego, it is a bright space with good visual information on the facades of the premises; many painted like old stalls. Entering the market is feeling that time was frozen in 1897, when it was inaugurated. At that time it was a supply store to supply the new wave of immigrants that came to Buenos Aires from the Old Continent and landed very close to the neighborhood. With a typically Italian façade, it boasts a large structure that includes semicircular arches and Tuscan order and an original interior with its large dome in the center, arches and metal columns with sheet and glass roofs. In 2000 the Market was declared a National Historic Monument by the Secretary of Culture of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires in recognition of its history and also to promote its visit.

The Market is an unmissable point in every walk through the San Telmo neighborhood and one of the reasons that keep it so current is that it knew how to renew and adapt to today's life with an interesting gastronomic offer that combines typical dishes and other more modern ones, with flavors from different parts of the world: Uruguayan goat; falafel and shawarma from the Middle East; French crêpes; Spanish tapas and tortillas; gourmet choripanes, empanadas and craft beers. Each place offers a unique menu and, together, they offer a comprehensive and varied proposal that coexists in total harmony.
