Galería Güemes

San Nicolás
Galería Güemes is a Historical Heritage of the City of Buenos Aires: a true period treasure to discover while touring the city center. It is a pedestrian walkway of more than 100 meters in length (it joins Florida and San Martín streets) with an incomparable cultural and historical value in which its mythical viewpoint stands out, which reopened to the public in 2013.

The building preserves the European architectural imprint of the late 19th century, with its marked Art Nouveau style. Modern Buenos Aires possesses these relics at every turn and this contrast is one of its most attractive facets.

Inaugurated in 1915, Galería Güemes functioned as a place for shopping and social events. At the time it housed a function room, a restaurant and a theater and there were also some offices and luxury apartments for rent. At 87 meters high and 14 floors, the building, which showed great elegance with its bronze details, its elevators and its imposing glass and iron domes, was considered the first "skyscraper" in Buenos Aires. The variety of uses that took place inside was surprising: a theater, a cabaret and a restaurant were operating in the basement. On the floors facing Florida there were houses and on the floors facing San Martín, offices. In addition, on the terrace of the 14th floor there is another restaurant with a gazebo. The most recognized characters of the show and the arts passed through its facilities, such as Carlos Gardel, who performed in 1917.

Today there are many commercial establishments of the most diverse areas: chocolate shops, leather goods stores, bookstores, wine bars and fashion houses that make this walk an ideal place to buy gifts. Another sector is destined to offices, which in turn coexist in this classic space with restaurants and confectioneries for all the public.
